Manchester City considered a second-tier team by Pep Guardiola

Lu Martin – the co-author of a book with Pep Guardiola – has said the coach took on the Manchester City job as a “personal challenge” and considers the club a “second-tier team”, like the status of Villarreal in La Liga.

Martin co-wrote the book ‘La meva gent, el meu futbol’ (My People, My Football) with Guardiola in 2001 while the 45-year-old was still a player and is a long-time friend of the Spaniard.

Guardiola took charge of City in the summer having left Bayern Munich, and has also managed Barcelona as well, claiming 21 titles between the two European giants.

Guardiola hinted on Monday that the City job could be his final in football management and Martin has said he is not surprised to here this, saying he took the role as it was a different sort of challenge.

Martin also suggested that the Catalan didn’t consider City a top side and instead wanted to try himself with a “second-tier team” and try to upset the dynamic of the bigger clubs in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola has won 13 of his 20 Premier League matches in charge of Manchester City this season, a 65% victory rate.

Martin Spanish radio station Cadena Ser: “At the moment his challenge is Manchester City, who are a team like Villarreal in La Liga, for example, a team which is not one of the top sides.

“I am not giving my opinion, I am telling you what Guardiola thinks, they are like a second-tier team in the Premier League.

“It is 30 years since Man City have won at Liverpool, for example. He sees it as a personal challenge, to compete against the biggest teams.
