It was gathered that a group of Boko Haram militants – numbering up to 40 – opened fire on the convoy that was being escorted by soldiers of the 121 Task Force Battalion, Pulka along Maiduguri-Bama road, close to Bama.
However, the soldiers killed 20 members of the Islamic cult.
While speaking to newsmen, the caretaker council chairman of Gwoza, Saeed Sambo, confirmed that the soldiers fought back fiercely, killing about 20 of the attackers.
He said they came under attack at about 10 a.m. when they were heading for Gwoza from Maiduguri.
“The insurgents first detonated an IED when the convoy was about 5km away from Bama, before they began to fire on us,” the chairman said.
He added: “Six (6) soldiers sustained various degrees of injuries, and more than twenty of heinous actors (BH) were killed by the rocket launcher fired by troops as I vividly saw them running away, as the military engaged them in response.”
