''I Made a Promise That I Didn't Want to Leave This World Without A Mark''; First Trekker, Suleiman Says

Fresh and trend setter Hashimu shocked Nigerians when the Katsina-born Suleiman Hashimu said he trekked from Lagos to Abuja in celebration of the victory of Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 presidential election.

While Hashimu’s novel way of celebrating victory was still the talk of the town, others soon joined the activity.
Hashimu, now seen as the face of the ‘trekking agenda,’ told journalists when he was received by Buhari in Abuja that he promised to trek for him if he won the presidential election.

He said, “I made this promise between me and my God; I do not want people to believe me. That was why I did not leave any evidence on ground.” in a recent interview with punch..

What is your name?

Suleiman Hashimu.

Which state are you from?

Katsina State.

How old are you?

I am 33 years old.

What do you do for a living?

I am a construction worker, I am based in Ibadan.

What motivated you to embark on this risky journey?

I made a promise that if Buhari should win the 2015 elections, I will trek from Lagos to Abuja, which I have done. I thank God that I made a promise and I fulfilled it.

What was the experience trekking from Lagos to Abuja?

I was in Lagos when Buhari was announced the winner of the March 28 presidential poll. I left Lagos at about 5am and I arrived in Ibadan around 6pm the next day.

Was your family supportive of your decision to trek for Buhari?

No. Many people, especially my family members, did not support it but I never gave up. In Ilorin, many people accompanied me for several miles until I stopped at Oloru, where the people received me. In Jebba, the reception was impressive too. When I was leaving Jebba, almost 20 people joined me and after a few miles, 18 of them turned back, only two went further with me and turned back after a while.

Did you encounter any ugly incident that probably made you give up on your mission?

I encountered armed robbers close to Mokwa, but I thank God they left me alone. That did not make me want to give up. I continued my journey from Mokwa to Kudu, then from Kutigi to Bida, and then to Suleja, then Zuba before reaching Abuja.

We heard you were given a gift…

Yes. It was in Zuba. The Agora of Zuba, Alhaji Muhammed Bello, gave me a gift of a horse.

How many hours were you trekking daily or did you trek nonstop?

I set out by six in the morning and passed the night in any village I found myself by 6pm. There was a day I was in the bush by 6pm and I had to trek to the next village till around 9pm, where I slept.

Did you trek for fame, fortune or both?

It was a promise I made to myself two years ago.

Are you not bothered that many Nigerians will dispute your claim? Are there evidences?

I don’t want anybody to believe me and I didn’t leave any evidence when I left Lagos. It was for me to fulfill the promise I made to God. Right from Ilorin, Kwara State, I did not walk five kilometres alone, I walked with people who volunteered and saw me off to the next village down to Abuja.
