Oyo shuts Coca-Cola over tax evasion

Officials of the Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue yesterday sealed the popular Nigeria Bottling Company (NBC) located at Asejire area of Ibadan for failing to comply with tax laws.

The exercise, which caused a gridlock and disrupted commercial activities for hours, also led to the sealing of 10 other firms, business interests, among them were hotels and petrol stations.

On the first day of the exercise on Wednesday, 15 firms were shut. The enforcement team had difficulty entering the premises of NBC as the staff put up a stiff resistance. The team eventually succeeded in sealing the company after serious arguments. Other affected firms were World Oil, Iwo Road; Forte Oil, Yidi, Agodi; Dove Filling Station, Oke-Ado; Forte Oil, Oke-Ado, and popular Mobil Station Ring Road all in Ibadan.

The Chairman of the state Board of Internal Revenue, Mr. Bicci Alli, reiterated that the affected companies had earlier been officially communicated of their outstanding debt to the government and another one to remind them of their inability to fulfil their payment within the regulated time, but they failed to heed the notice. He said the enforcement was pursuant to the provision of Section 8(1-2) Oyo State Professional/ Business Premises Law 1996 (as amended).
