38-year-old Gay, Leo Varadkar Elects As New Prime Minister In Ireland

Ireland's ruling party, Fine Gael, has chosen Leo Varadkar as its new leader on Friday. Varadar, a renowned gay, 38-year-old son of an Indian immigrant, will become the youngest person to hold the post.


He will succeed Enda Kenny, 66, as prime minister in a surprising generational and social change. Varadar, who is the current Minister of Social Protection, defeated ministerial colleague Simon Coveney with an overwhelming majority of votes from lawmakers Of the center-right party.

He is expected to assume the post of prime minister when the next parliament is on June 13.
The newly elected prime minister had already received public support of almost two-thirds of the parliamentary party, accounting for 65 per cent.
