Stop Singing About Butts And Boobs! - Reggae veteran slams artistes

Veteran reggae musician, Ras Kimono, performing at Ras Kimono Live & Unplugged.

He spoke more about this, as well as about the Nigerian music industry that is now developing in an interview published today by Punch News'Sunday Scoop.

"Music should be a weapon of social change," he said.

"A musician must be a prophet to speak the truth, because he affects everyone in society, but you can tell me what these young artists say.
"They do nothing but singing about ass, tits and other worldly things that add value to no one.
"It's not a bad thing to play party music or dancehall, but there is a problem when 95% of the music there sounds the same and makes no sense.
"Most of the time I listen to these songs and I am angry. Look at the musicians before, the songs are still relevant today, decades after they were originally released.
"But if you're listening to a song that was only released last year, you might want to blow it up. That's because these songs have a very short life.
"After people have been dancing for a while, I take her to the garbage can of time and pass to the next song.
"It's not about what music should be like. People still sing Fela's music today because it still has something to offer.
"The reggae music I'm doing is dealing with topical issues that bother society. I really want young artists to have a heart change and think about the future, it's very important."
Ras Kimono expressed his joy over the wealth of successful Nigerian musicians, but added another piece of advice.
