Three people have been taken into custody after police swooped on a car in a dramatic incident on the West Gate Bridge in Melbourne during the afternoon peak period.

The incident began following an alleged armed robbery at a jewellery store in Lalor, in Melbourne's north, about 2:00pm.

It is believed the same three males under 18 were then involved in another incident, an attempted armed robbery at a tobacconist, at Preston about 30 minutes later.

Police then began to pursuit a green car believed to be involved in the incident, which was tracked by a media helicopter and broadcast live on a Channel Nine Facebook page.

As the car drove onto the West Gate Freeway, it was driving in the left hand lane when it suddenly pulled over in the middle of the bridge.

A number of police cars suddenly arrived on the scene blocking the car in, as officers pounced on the driver.
The rear window of the car appeared to broken as police took the driver away.

There were chaotic scenes as officers tried to stop traffic on the bridge as the arrest unfolded.

Victoria Police said three boys, all under the age of 18, were arrested.

Traffic was stopped during the incident but the lanes have now all been reopened.
