Whoop! It's Exactly 60 Years Today Since A Woman First Read the News on British TV...

Yes, the first time a woman ever appeared on Tv as a news caster even before presenting came alive was July 3 Back in 1955, Elvis Presley was on the cusp of stardom and Winston Churchill had just left Downing Street for the last time. A woman called Barbara Mandell was quietly making history by becoming the first woman to read the news on British TV sitting, implausibly enough, in a make-believe kitchen at ITN.

Yes really. It seems shocking now but when women were first permitted to read the news, they were only allowed to read some news. Tragedies were off-limits. Wars were a no-no.
